Jerry Goldsmith’s terrifying score to Richard Donner’s satanic horror, won him an Academy Award back in 1977. Some of his best work, it touches every nerve while still managing to sustain an engaging love theme. In ‘Killer Storm’ powerful string sections combine with stirring vocal arrangements to accompany the death of the priest. ‘New Ambassador’, the film’s love theme offers a romantic and uplifting element, used in more sombre form as the family come to learn the truth about their son, in ‘A Doctor, Please’ and ‘A Sad Message’. Donner’s claim that Goldsmith’s score was as important to the success of the film as the imagery is high praise and undoubtedly true. Re-issued to coincide with the film’s 25th anniversary, this cd includes fifteen minutes of music omitted from the original release and extensive liner notes. Cues are also largely presented in film order, though the main title, ‘Ava Satani’ is replaced by the one that featured over the end credits. A vocal version of ‘New Ambassador’ entitled ‘The Piper Dreams’ with lyrics written and performed by Goldsmith’s wife Carol appears at the end of the album. A Classic.
