Walter Hill’s highly stylised, choreographed and conceptualised action thriller about a novice gang from Coney Island fighting their way back home through New York’s gang territory remains a cult classic thanks to some great sequences and dialogue. The soundtrack worked extremely well within the confines of the film, heightening moments of excitement and providing an urban edge to the proceedings; the album evokes much of the film’s energy with some exceptions. Cues written for the film by Barry de Vorzon, known for his electronic soundscapes, especially the ‘Theme from The Warriors’ and ‘Baseball Furies Chase’ are impressive – if only there were more than three cues included here. The bulk of the album is made up of songs from the film, the best of which ‘In The City’ by Joe Walsh, ‘Nowhere To Run’ by Arnold McCuller and Desmond Child’s ‘Last of An Ancient Breed’ manage to make it worthwhile. Dialogue from the film has also been added and is done rather well, creating some sense of filmic progression and encouraging the listener to feel involved in the action. This was a clever move because it manages to divert the listener into believing there is more here than is actually the case, especially the voice of the female DJ as she tracks the gang’s progress across the city. The lack of liner notes and extras however leaves you feeling that a lot more could have been done to make this a far more collectable package.
