Star Trek V
1989, Paramount.
Jerry Goldsmith.
SBME, CD, 2008, SBMK724572-2
Rating:
Though the fifth Star Trek film is considered one of the weakest, as Kirk and Co. head off to find God, Jerry Goldsmith’s score injects plenty of epic energy and adventure into the proceedings, with a memorable action and adversity motif that really does the job. Launching with Alexander Courage’s TV fanfare, The Mountain, is a cerebral introduction to the spiritual sub-text of the movie, underpinned by Goldsmith’s 1980s love of electronica, evident throughout the score. ‘Without Help’ and ‘Open The Gates‘, both striking action cues and ‘A Busy Man‘, with its solid brass and tranquil string section are effective and melodic. ‘Let’s Get Out Of Here’, is a stirring march and ‘Life’s a Dream’ combines all the major themes in majestic manner. If you ignore the terrible ‘80s pop effort (‘The Moon’s A Window To Heaven’) at the end then this is pretty near perfect. Cosmic.
