Rating:

The first instalment of director Peter Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy was a mammoth project deserving a mammoth score; luckily, Howard Shore has lived up to expectations, producing exactly the type of thunderous, powerful ‘event’ that is needed to do the story justice. A combination of panoramic actioners (‘The Shadow of the Past’), pastoral folk (‘Concerning Hobbits’) and awe inspiring choruses, performed in Elvish, bring Middle Earth to life with stunning results. Whether you are a fan of songstress, Enya, or not, her inclusion adds something mysterious and haunting to the score that works extremely well, especially when heard alongside more structured choral cues such as ‘The Prophecy’. While Fellowship is not the most adventurous score in terms of content, it remains lively, spirited and conveys perfectly the feel and intention of the film whilst holding its own beyond its confines. Melodic without being too obvious, this is a solid, effective piece of work.
